The design provides 78 ensuite bedrooms for the elderly and adopts architectural details from nearby buildings to integrate its appearance with the local context. The proposal is cut into the landscape to reduce the mass which is broken down further by varying materials and ridge heights.
The orientation of the care home takes advantage of the south westerly views over the picturesque valley and the River Derwent. Large landscaped areas, including a woodland walk, are integrated with the building and existing topography to provide a tranquil setting and areas for residents to relax.
The proposal also retains Darley Lodge which will be refurbished in a manner sympathetic to its historic character.
