Bolam Coyne

The Grade II* Byker Estate was originally designed by George Erskine in the 1970’s, and Bolam Coyne was the one component of this otherwise highly successful and iconic project which had failed socially.

The scheme involved the extensive refurbishment and re-modelling of 15 residential units, and overcame the complicated shared access to homes through balconies and across the courtyard that had caused problems for the tenants.

Our appointment provided specialist heritage consultancy services and employer agent duties, and involved the complex liaison with numerous stakeholders, design team members and heritage teams. The project won the RICS Renaissance award and Lord Mayors’ Design Award.
